BTW, the shields over each patient's head are mirrors: the only way an iron lung patient can make eye contact with another person.

that is so sad. I remember there was a book out a couple years ago about the polio scare, maybe it even took place in houston, about how mothers were afraid to let their children outside all summer. i need to look for that book...
