If you've never watched this BBC miniseries (now, don't stop reading just because I said "
BBC miniseries", okay?) you really need to remedy that failure as soon as possible. Five episodes in total, this tracks the journey of Oliver, an out-of-work professor, and his "predestined companion" from Wales to The Orkneys. Crime, jazz, crosswords, love, anagrams, Beethoven, Restoration playwrights - they're all mixed in here to create a delightful stew. We first watched it in law school on PBS; it came out on DVD, finally, just a few years ago.
Oliver says "
I have never expected the world to make sense. But suddenly it was making so little sense --- it almost made sense."
How can you resist that?
